Train pass

When and where you can see a steam train pass through London and take a tour of it at Christmas

Steam trains have long captivated the imaginations of Londoners since childhood, but many of us were born long after Britain’s last steam passenger service was taken out of service in 1968.

For most Londoners, our experience of steam trains is limited to seeing them in museums or on film sets, and very few of us have had the opportunity to board them.

But this month, Londoners will have the chance to cross the Thames on one of the country’s last working steam trains.

The 61306 Mayflower, one of two Class B1 steam engines that were built in 1948, will pull cars into parts of West London on specific dates in December.

The Steam Dream will take place on the 13, 14, 20 and 22 of the month, departing from London Victoria Station at 6:50 p.m. and returning to the same station at 9:50 p.m.

The train will pass through places and sites such as Barnes, Richmond, Chelsea Harbor and Battersea Power Station, crossing the River Thames a total of six times in a loop.
