Portugal to avoid quarantine and testing with travel pass plan

THaiti is grappling with the emergence of new clusters, jeopardizing its plans to reopen to international visitors in July.

The country says it wants its vacation island of Phuket to open first as long as it can immunize most of its population.

Reuters reports:

Thailand reported 1,543 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, the biggest increase since the start of the pandemic and the fourth all-time high this week, amid a third wave of infections in the Southeast Asian country.

While Thailand has so far managed to keep the number of cases relatively contained compared to many other countries, the new outbreak comes as many have traveled over the New Year’s holidays to Songkran and with vaccination rates still weak.

When asked if lockdowns would be imposed, health official Chawetsan Namwat said measures were formulated based on the number of cases in each region and would be offered to the coronavirus task force for approval on Friday.

“You have to divide the areas according to seriousness, which is different and the measures must therefore be adapted to each area“Chawetsan said in a briefing. Authorities have already urged people to limit their travel and start working from home.

Thailand has vaccinated less than 0.4% of its population, behind neighbors like Malaysia with 1.5% and 14.6% in Singapore, according to a Reuters estimate.
