Myst remake to release for PC and Game Pass on August 26

The latest remake of Myst, a puzzle adventure game from the 1990s, which has already been updated under the names Myst: Masterpiece Edition (1999) and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition (2014), will be released this month. Just called Myst, the latest version was redesigned for virtual reality and flat screens by Cyan, the studio whose name appeared on the original in 1993.

It adds “new art, new sound, reimagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization,” as well as photo and in-game graphics capture options, including ray tracing. While you can play it on a regular monitor, the VR version will have free roaming and teleportation motion, and options to turn smoothly or in the blink of an eye, quickly climb stairs and ladders, and take support a variety of headsets: Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Rift S and Quest via Oculus Link.

Thanks to its availability on Mac and its release right at the start of the CD-ROM era, the original Myst was a huge hit and was the best-selling PC game until the Sims knocked it out of it. perch. It’s not universally liked, however, thanks to a few illogical puzzles and a static world of linked images that you click to move around. As Richard Cobbett said, “Myst reinforced the toxic idea that adventures were about puzzles and boredom rather than adventure and fun.”

Myst will be available on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Oculus, Game Pass, and Mac on August 26.
