International airline industry launches COVID-19 pass trial

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Monday launched the trial of a pass designed for the pandemic era, Asia Times reported.

IATA has launched a two-week pilot trial of the digital pass on Singapore Airlines’ Singapore-London route. The initiative is overdue, as perhaps no global sector has been hit harder by COVID-19 than air travel.

Last year, international passenger demand was 75.6% lower than 2019 levels. Annual traffic for Asia-Pacific airlines fell 80.3% in 2020 compared to 2019, the largest decline in all regions, Asia Times reported.

To reopen borders without quarantine and restart aviation, governments must be confident that they are effectively mitigating the risk of COVID-19 importation. This means having accurate information about passengers’ COVID-19 health status.

Inform passengers of the tests, vaccinations and other measures they need before travelling, details of where they can get tested and give them the opportunity to share their tests and vaccination results in a verifiable way, secure and privacy-friendly is key to giving governments the confidence to open borders.
